Located in the Flintshire village of Holywell, St. Winefride’s Well is said to be the oldest site of pilgrimage in Britain that is still regularly visited. The legend tells of beautiful but pious Winefride (Winifred) who was murdered by a jealous suitor, Prince Caradoc, when she rejected his advances in favour of becoming a nun. The holy spring appeared where the blood of her severed head soaked into the ground. Fortunately for Winefride her uncle, St. Beuno, joined her head back to her body and she was restored to life. The waters are believed by many to have healing powers and to provide cures that can only be described as miraculous. St. Winefride’s relics (bones) were later taken to Shrewsbury where she became the resident saint of the Abbey. Her removal from Wales to England was the subject of an excellent book in the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters and entitled: A Morbid taste for Bones – now also part of the Cadfael Television series. The Well of St. Winifred the Virgin s is mentioned in the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Many royal rulers have visited the well including King Richard The Lionheart (Cœur de Lion) King Henry V and James II. At the age of five, Princess Victoria (later Queen Victoria) visited St, Winefride’s well with King Leopold in 1826. The most recent royal pilgrimage took place in 2005 when HRH the Duchess of Gloucester visited the well.
