The walled gardens of Ardencraig is one of the most important tourist attractions on the Scottish island of Bute. It was once attached to the nearby 19th century mansion, Ardencraig House, and was used to produce plants and flowers for the larger estate. It was part of a much larger landscape designed by Percy S. Cane the renowned horticulturist and publisher. It is located on the slopes of Canada Hill overlooking waters of the Firth of Clyde and is less than two miles by road from the town centre of Rothesay. This remarkable walled garden along with its extensive greenhouses was acquired by the Local Authority in 1970 and has be nurtured and developed to create a remarkable propagation centre and show garden. Plants from this centre are used for floral exhibitions at the Rothesay Esplanade Gardens as well as in the displays of other towns in Scotland. Large scale bedding and fuchsia displays contain some of the best cultivars obtainable. Visitors can also view the extensive aviaries that house a wide range of foreign birds species.
