Constructed on the site of an earlier Dower House, Armadale Castle was once the home of the MacDonalds of Skye. It was first built in or around 1790 and was effectively a country mansion. In 1815 it was extended and styled as a castle by the renowned baronial architect , James Gillespie Graham. It was never intended to be a practical defensive structure but the design suitably reflected the warrior heritage of the clan. In 1855 a fire swept through the building causing significant damage. The central section was rebuilt to a design by David Bryce who is considered to have perfected the Scottish Baronial Style of architecture. It is still in place today. The mansion was largely abandoned as a residence in 1925. Although the castle is now largely a ruin the gardens and surrounding woodlands have been maintained and are considered some of the finest in Scotland. Visitors have access to over 40 acres of the estate which includes 200 year old trees, giant daisy flowers from New Zealand and Himalayan Birch. There are magnificent views over the Sound of Sleat towards the mainland. The Museum of the Isles is also located within the Armadale Estate and features many fascinating aspects of the Island’s history. The Armadale Estate is now owned and managed by the Clan Donald Lands Trust.
