Although people often refer to the tower as Big Ben it is actually only the bell inside that has this name. The Tower is really called The Elizabeth Tower – named for HRH Queen Elizabeth II – and is considered to be Britain’s favourite landmark. It is part of the Palace of Westminster and is the largest four-facing chiming clock tower in the world. It’s been featured in many films including “the 39 Steps, Thunderball, and Shanghai Knights. Big Ben is the second largest bell in Britain and is actually cracked. A tradition claims that if Big Ben ever strikes 13 then the lions of Trafalgar Square will come to life. Some claim it’s haunted and there are even prison cells in the tower for members of Parliament who have been very naughty – naturally they’re no longer used – although perhaps they should be.
