Legend tells of a race of strange sea-creatures that live off the coast of the Isle of Lewis. Known as the Blue Men of Minch they are said to hunt in the stretch of sea between the Pabail Uarach peninsular and the tiny Shiant Islands. Similar to mermen and mermaids they have skin like a dolphin and legs that work like a fish’s tail. From time-to-time they approach lone ships and try to persuade the sailors to join them in water with promises of sensual delights. If this approach fails they produce great waves and winds thus earning them the name Storm Kelpies. The Blue Men are believed to live in underwater caves hidden in the countless craggy inlets that can be found along the east coast of Lewis. One myth claims that they’re descendants of Minos, the King of Crete, and his wife, Pasiphaê, daughter of the Sun through the children of his son Glaucus. After the destruction of Crete they fled the Mediterranean and made a new home in the Hebrides of Scotland, A more traditional legend claims they are fallen Angels spared from the underworld. Cryptozoologists have suggested that the legend may be based on sightings of marine creatures as yet unrecorded by science. It has also been suggested that they were once Viking raiders who would use the Shiant Islands as cover before attacking passing vessels and the story has been passed down and adapted through folklore.
