The only free-ranging herd of reindeer in Britain is located in the Cairngorm Mountains south east of Aviemore in Inverness-shire.  By John Robertson – Published: 3 December 2014
The Reindeer Centre is located in Glenmore on the banks of Loch Morlich and provides tours up the mountain to the reindeer herd and paddocks at the foot of Ben MacDui just above Rothiemurchus Forest and close to the base station of the Cairngorm Mountain Railway. Tours usually leave from Reindeer House in Glenmore at 11.00am and again at 2.30pm during the summer months. Visitors have the opportunity to get close to the reindeer which are tame and friendly while the guide explains more about these wonderful animals. Reindeer were first re-introduced into the Cairngorms in 1952 by Swedish Reindeer specialists, Mikel Utsi and his wife, Dr. Ethel Lindgren. Well adapted to cold climates, the reindeer can find their own basic food do not require special shelters.
