Castle Ward is a country mansion with a split personality. It was built in during the 1760’s By Bernard Ward, Baron Lord Bangor, and his wife, Lady Anne, who had very different views regarding architecture and design. Bernard Ward favoured the classical Palladian style and so the front of the house was designed in this fashion. Lady Anne, already known for her whimsical ideas and fancies, desired a more romantic Gothick approach and this was the style used for the rear of the house. Although this caused some controversy at the time it also makes Castle Ward one of the Ireland’s most interesting historical properties and a tribute to the eccentricities of the landed gentry. It is not surprising then that Bernard and Anne were to go their separate ways in around 1766. Castle ward has a few mysteries that still need solving. Around 160 years ago Lady Bagnor, also known as ‘Harriet the Evictor’ is said to have forcibly removed the residents of Audley’s Town. After they gone the village was torn down and very little remains to ever show it existed. The mystery is what happened to the residents. According to the records the villagers were put on a ship bound for the USA. However, a review of American records show they never arrived. What happened is a mystery. The Castle was built on the slopes of a small hill and overlooks the waters of Lough Strangford. The estate is 820 acres in size and includes the remains of the original Castle Ward, beautiful landscaped gardens and many excellent woodland walks. Castle Ward has rtegulary hosted music events including an annual Opera Festival. It is in the care of the National Trust.
