Chiswick House is a Neo-Palladian villa located in the Hounslow area of London. Renowned for its architecture and its history the building is now managed by English Heritage. It was visited John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin – two of these men, Adams and Jefferson, would go on to become American Presidents. Franklin, while never elected as president, is still featured on the 100 dollar bill in respect of his enourmous contribution to the early development of the USA. Some of the many other famous people who stayed there include the philosophers Voltaire and Rousseau as well as Tsar Nicholas I, Queen Victoria and the man responsible for the unification of Italy – Giuseppe Garibaldi. The gardens are considered magnificent and said to have inspired many aspects of New York’s Central Park. A sizeable lead Sphinx and are unusual ‘pagan’ fireplaces are just some of the curiosities on display. The House is said to be haunted by the ghost of a cook who’s presence can be sensed by a smell of fresh fried bacon eggs – usually at around 3:30pm.
