Secret Cottage is a fine example of a Grade 2 listed traditional workers cottage, built in the local Hornton Stone. Unlike other properties it has remained thatched since it was first constructed in circa 1580.

The thatch caught fire three times in the last century and undoubtedly motivated other owners of dwellings to convert to the local Cotswold stone tiles. Once three cottages with separate families living and working on the nearby farms, it is now one single dwelling. The cottage isn’t haunted, but there are stories of other nearby properties that are.

Right up until the 1980’s, the occupiers were still cleaning themselves by boiling kettles on the kitchen range and pouring water into the cast iron bath which was situated in the kitchen. The cottage is heated by an Aga and three working fireplaces, two of which are large inglenooks. When it is extremely cold oil fired radiators can be used, but are seldom needed because the thick walls insulate the cottage perfectly.

Although recently updated because it had fallen into disrepair, being inside gives a near perfect experience of what life was like a few hundred years ago with all the original elm beams, joists, stairways, floors and planked window surrounds. Complimented by the owners’ passion for antique furniture and paintings that would have been in situ over the years, many visitors describe it as a step back in time, with some describing it as hobbit house and fairyland. Recently Visit Britain organised a film of the cottage to promote tourism to the Cotswolds. The cottage can be viewed by taking our tour of picturesque Cotswold hidden villages. During the tour you are invited inside periodically throughout the day for morning coffee with pastries, a delicious buffet lunch and in the afternoon a traditional cream tea.
